Michel Eugene Chevreul (1786-1889) - A French chemist invented a substance called "stearine" (known today as stearin or stearin acid) by removing the glycerine from the tallow mixture. Harder than tallow, stearine burned brighter and longer. It was this discovery that led to the improvement of candle quality and made improvements in the manufacture of wicks.
