Throughout the Dark Ages and Middle Ages, candles were one of the great necessities of life. The first dipped candles were made by the Romans from rendered animal fat called tallow. They were smoky and foul smelling but functional.
Since they were cheap and easily available, tallow candles were the most widely used types of candles for centuries."
